I've met quite a few Working Cocker Spaniels lately. They are so far without exception the trickiest to photograph. They don't stop moving, their noses are constantly to the ground and they spend their time either in the distance, or at your feet. If they do look up for a second, it's usually to focus on their owner, rather than stare down the strange lady with the camera.
After what seems like weeks of dark, grey, wet weather the first nice day gave me very contrasty light to boot. Digby did his frantic Spaniel thing and when I spotted an old brick wall bathed in sunlight I decided I had no choice but to embrace the colour and the contrast, hope he'd stay still long enough and see what happened.
For our second shoot he calmed down a bit and even managed to look at me a couple of times, helped by the owner's strategic manoeuvrings.
